A 28-year-old U.S. Postal Service employee in Oakland Park, Florida, is accused of stealing a winning lottery ticket from a mailbox and cashing the prize. Authorities say she removed the ticket and kept the winnings.

The incident began when a woman in Tampa, who had won $2,600 on a lottery ticket, decided to send the ticket as a gift to a relative living in South Florida without redeeming it. The envelope never arrived, and the sender reported the missing ticket to police.

Investigators discovered the prize had already been claimed five days after the drawing at a Florida Lottery office. According to investigators, the employee allegedly took the ticket while on duty and, using her position at the post office, presented it in person to collect the money.

The 28-year-old now faces charges of aggravated theft and possession of stolen mail. After her arrest she was released on bail.
