Jimmy Kimmel is under fire from both Donald and Melania Trump. The president and the First Lady have demanded that the ABC host be fired after a monologue that aired a few days before the attack in Washington. In an imagined speech for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Kimmel referred to Melania by saying, “You have the glow of a widow in waiting.” On Saturday night, at the hotel where the dinner was held, a man opened fire before being stopped by Secret Service agents.
Trump condemned what he called Kimmel’s “despicable incitement to violence.” “Wow, Jimmy Kimmel, who is not funny at all, as his poor ratings show, made an absolutely shocking statement on his show,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The day after, a madman tried to enter the ballroom of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner armed with a rifle, a pistol and many knives. He was there for a very obvious and sinister reason.” Trump added that he appreciates the public outrage and, although he usually would not respond to Kimmel, this crossed a line: “Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC,” he concluded.
The First Lady also spoke strongly. “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is meant to divide our country,” Melania Trump said, calling the television host “a coward” and urging ABC to “take a stand.”
“The monologue about me and my family is not comedy: his words are corrosive and worsen the political sickness in the United States,” the First Lady wrote on X. “People like Kimmel should not have the opportunity to come into our homes every night to spread hatred. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will continue to protect him.” Kimmel has previously been criticized by Donald Trump, who called him “Democratic trash,” accused him of having “zero talent and terrible ratings,” and urged ABC to fire him.
The White House also criticized Kimmel. “Who, in full possession of their faculties, would say a wife would be ‘beaming’ at the idea of the possible murder of the husband she loves?!” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said during the briefing.
“After what I saw Saturday night with the First Lady, I can tell you she was anything but that. This kind of rhetoric about the president, the First Lady and their supporters is completely insane, and it is remarkable that the American people have to endure it night after night after night,” Leavitt added.
