A 15-year-old boy survived for about two days clinging to an overturned boat in the Bering Sea off Alaska after an accident that killed his older brother and a cousin. According to U.S. media reports, Derek Parker Aghnaanga was located Monday morning near St. Lawrence Island and recovered by the crew of the fishing vessel Northwest Explorer. The boy, who showed signs of hypothermia, had been exposed to water temperatures of about 10 degrees Celsius after his boat capsized on Saturday night.

The three had left the village of Savoonga on Friday to fish for halibut and were expected to return on Sunday. According to the 15-year-old’s account, his cousin initially managed to hold on to the boat but died before rescuers arrived, while his brother became trapped beneath the hull. The bodies of both were later recovered. “He’s a really tough kid,” said Adam White, captain of the fishing vessel that rescued him.
