Two retired people travel the world… three times a year. In France, the couple Claudine and Jean-Louis Munar, aged 74 and 75, have pursued their passion for travel despite a modest pension of only €2,400. They manage this thanks to a house‐sitting platform, where someone stays temporarily in another person’s home during the owner’s absence, taking care of the property and sometimes pets in exchange for free accommodation.

The platform DomSitting, reported by the French magazine Marie France, gave the couple the opportunity to travel while saving on lodging—an arrangement that fit their limited budget perfectly. “Without DomSitting, we simply could not travel,” Claudine said, now effectively a house‐sitter. Their routine while traveling is quite ordinary: feeding and walking the animals, watering plants, collecting the mail, and making sure everything in the house is functioning properly.

Often they stay, at no cost, in generous homes with gardens or swimming pools. There are no rents to pay and no utility bills for the houses they look after, and their own home incurs very few expenses while they are away. Their only regular costs are fuel and groceries. Claudine estimates the couple saves nearly €5,000 a year this way.

Over the years the couple has made some destinations regular stops: “We have made eight trips to Charente‐Maritime, several to Carpentras to see an eye specialist who owns a lovely house with an indoor heated pool, and six trips in six consecutive years to a small manor in Saône‐et‐Loire,” the older woman said. These are places they likely would never have visited without this kind of arrangement.

Claudine and Jean‐Louis do not hide their enthusiasm: “Five weeks in Strasbourg would have cost several hundred euros just for accommodation.” This program, offered exclusively to retirees, allows them not only to travel at lower cost but also to visit relatives living throughout France. The couple says they will continue to accept new assignments as long as their health permits.
