This year’s Victory Day will be scaled down in Russia amid fears of Ukrainian drone attacks. Traditional military parades will not be limited only to Moscow and Saint Petersburg, as previously announced, but will also take place in several other locations across the country. In some cases, events will be canceled entirely.
Canceled or scaled-back events
In Samara, for example, preparations for the parade have been canceled. Workers dismantled the stands that had already been set up on Kuibyshev Square. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev explicitly cited “security challenges.”
In the Krasnodar region, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev canceled the parade in the regional capital and moved the “Immortal Regiment” march, dedicated to descendants of those who died in the Great Patriotic War, to an online event. The same measure was taken in Kaliningrad, where military units stopped preparing for the parade. Restrictions have also been imposed in the Chuvashia and Kaluga regions. In Chuvashia, Governor Oleg Nikolayev announced the cancellation of the parade, fireworks and the “Immortal Regiment” march. In Kaluga, Governor Vladislav Shapsha announced similar measures: the cancellation of mass gatherings and fireworks, with the exception of smaller settlements.
