A new poll rejects Donald Trump and the war with Iran. According to a majority of American voters-64%-the president was wrong to order an attack. That is the clear finding of the New York Times/Siena poll published today, which also shows a new low in the president’s popularity: 59% disapprove of his performance while only 37% approve.

Trump’s disapproval rating rises further on economic issues, reaching 64%, and is even higher-69%-for the cost of living. Voters connect rising living costs to the conflict with Iran, which has contributed to higher gasoline prices and broader price increases. The centerpiece of Trump’s domestic policy, a mass deportation campaign, also receives a negative verdict: 56% of voters disapprove of his immigration approach while only 41% approve. These figures are likely to increase concern among Republicans ahead of the midterm elections, where protest voting against an unpopular president’s party can be decisive.

Furthermore, 44% of voters say they are personally harmed by the administration’s policies, nearly ten points higher than last autumn’s 36%. Another important signal for November’s vote: among independent voters-those not registered as Democrats or Republicans-Trump’s disapproval rises to 69%, and 47% say his policies have personally harmed them.

At the same time, the poll shows a difficult outlook for the Democratic Party: only 26% say they are satisfied with the party’s direction. Among Democratic voters, 44% are dissatisfied with the party, while only 23% of Republicans express the same dissatisfaction with the GOP.
