Judge William Sullivan has declared the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the 36-year-old American accused of killing her three children in 2023 at the family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, null. The judge, however, stayed his ruling for one hour to allow the defense to file an appeal with a higher court. After seven days of deliberations, the eleven jurors who favored a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity failed to convince the twelfth. Clancy does not deny strangling her children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, eight months—but says she was affected by postpartum psychosis and heard a voice ordering her to kill them.

The five-week trial, broadcast live on television, has reignited debate in the United States about maternal mental health. The defense argues Clancy repeatedly sought help before the killings but received what her attorney, Kevin Reddington, called “poor medical care.” The prosecution contends she planned the killings and was capable of understanding the consequences of her actions. Immediately after killing the children, Clancy jumped from a second-floor window in an apparent suicide attempt, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. If convicted of first-degree murder, she faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
