Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk today condemned a series of recent attacks on Ukrainian citizens in Poland, urging leading right-wing politicians in the country to break their silence and publicly denounce the violence.

The prime minister’s remarks follow a brutal attack that took place last Sunday in the southwestern city of Wroclaw (Breslau), where three men assaulted a Ukrainian couple.

Police have arrested two of the suspects, one already charged and the other facing similar charges. Authorities are still searching for the third suspect.

The attack was the latest in a series of anti-Ukrainian incidents in recent weeks, amid rising political tensions between the neighboring countries over historical disputes.

“I call on everyone,” Tusk said, “to stand firmly and resolutely with the state, with the police, with the most vulnerable, and with the women and children who are being beaten today not only by criminals, but sometimes by people obsessed with politics.”

He urged Karol Nawrocki, a right‐wing figure in Poland, to “stop being silent on this issue” and Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the socially conservative opposition party Law and Justice, “to stop calling for the formation of militias, as he recently did, because he is dissatisfied with the police.”

Tusk argued that these incidents, together with anti‐Ukrainian rhetoric promoted by some right‐wing politicians for political gain, are harming Poland’s international reputation. He noted that Poland has received widespread praise abroad for providing shelter and assistance to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.

“Even today,” he added, “I hear people in every capital say that Poland did something unprecedented. And this will become a thing of the past if we allow criminals, football thugs, and ordinary offenders to beat and humiliate people with impunity simply because they speak with a slightly different accent,” he said.

Tusk added that “it is known which political forces are behind these groups of people who pose as great patriots while actually damaging our image and reputation in the world, and above all creating a sense of threat.”

The prime minister finally urged all Poles to report any such incidents to the police immediately.
