More than one hundred homes have been destroyed by fires that broke out in the Krokstadelva area of Drammen, about 40 kilometers from Oslo, Norway. Police chief Frode Presthus said at a press conference that the blaze is out of control. Several hundred people have been evacuated and, according to broadcaster NRK, there are no reported injuries.

Six firefighting helicopters have been deployed to assist in extinguishing the fire.

“This is a terrible incident affecting all of Drammen,” Mayor Kjell Arne Hermansen told NRK. The municipality has set up a crisis management team and is preparing an evacuation center. “All our resources, from the municipality and emergency services, are currently focused on helping local residents,” Hermansen said. Two assembly points have been established for displaced people.

“We are working to save homes,” Police Chief Presthus added. The fire has spread into a row-housing area; NRK reports that one responding firefighter suffered minor injuries. Residents have been asked to avoid the area and to report anyone who is missing or unreachable.

“Leave the area. Close doors, windows and ventilation ducts, and turn off ventilation if possible,” reads the emergency message issued by police. “There is a risk of explosions and toxic smoke emissions.”
