A swimmer was killed in a shark attack near Perth on Australia’s west coast. Emergency services were alerted to a reported “shark-related incident” at Sorrento Beach at about 10:15 a.m. local time on Friday.

Police said authorities carried out an extensive search of the area using helicopters and vessels, but did not specify whether a body had been recovered, the BBC reports. Local media said witnesses described seeing a man pulled underwater by a shark about 50 metres from the shore, and others reported seeing blood in the water. One witness told the local newspaper WAtoday she saw the man being “devoured” as the shark “threw him about like a fish.”

“I’m a nurse, so I see many distressing things, but watching someone torn apart in the water in front of me is very hard to process,” she told WAtoday.
