This morning, 1 August, the Border Police at Fiumicino airport began initial random checks on third‐country (non‐EU) passengers arriving on flights from Barcelona and Madrid after Spain temporarily suspended the Schengen agreement. Preparations for the checks started last night and involve “selective” verifications of third‐country nationals arriving from Spain to confirm they hold documents that permit travel within the Schengen area.

Checks are being carried out at disembarkation gates to verify the validity of entry into Italy. The measures, which will remain in force for one month from today, provide for further checks only in cases of anomalies or suspected irregularities.

During the summer season, more than 60 flights from Spain arrive daily at Fiumicino. Since last night, Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) has posted notices on its communication channels and social media informing passengers that “pursuant to provisions issued by the competent authorities, spot checks at Schengen internal borders have been temporarily reintroduced for passengers arriving in Italy on flights from Spain,” and advising travelers to carry a valid travel identity document; flights are operating normally.
