With the European Parliament’s approval of its negotiating position on the returns regulation, “the Meloni government’s line has become the European line with regard to the external dimension of migration.” This was said to the press in Brussels by Nicola Procaccini, co-chair of the ECR group of Brothers of Italy.
“We are extremely satisfied,” he added. “The trilogue,” the negotiations with the EU Council, “will begin almost immediately. This regulation replaces the returns directive and will allow European countries to have a common system that is more effective, and also stricter, in terms of returns, procedures, preventing access, and also regarding the creation of return hubs in third countries.”
For Procaccini, “this also means strengthening the well-known issue of centres in Albania.” On the external dimension of migration, he noted that “we have always supported addressing migration before it reaches European territory, through the involvement of third countries, especially those of origin and transit. We achieved this result with a broad and strong centre-right majority. We will work so that by the beginning of summer there is an effective returns regulation,” he concluded.
