A shooting occurred today inside the Jewish complex in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, which includes the Temple Israel synagogue and a Jewish school. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said a man drove his car into the synagogue, security personnel confronted him and opened fire. The suspect was killed in the ensuing shootout.

According to the sheriff, there were no other reported injuries. Residents in the area were asked to shelter in place, and the Jewish Federation of Detroit advised all local Jewish organizations to implement a lockout protocol: no one should enter or leave their buildings.

Responding agencies included the West Bloomfield Police, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan State Police, and the FBI. Videos shared online show emergency personnel working to clear the temple while smoke is visible coming from the building.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said that U.S. President Donald Trump was informed.

Increased security at places of worship

Following the attack at the West Bloomfield synagogue, police forces in Michigan and other U.S. cities have stepped up security measures at religious institutions, according to CNN.

The chief of police in Ann Arbor, about 40 km southwest of West Bloomfield, ordered increased patrols at places of worship and schools as a security precaution, saying the move is proactive and that there is no known threat to the Ann Arbor community.

Philadelphia police posted on X that they are closely monitoring the incident and increasing checks around houses of worship and other sensitive locations. In New York City, authorities said they will continue “high-visibility patrols” at Jewish cultural and religious institutions as an extra precaution given the current elevated threat level.
