She unexpectedly became a mother just two hours after being taken to the hospital for “excruciating pain.” The story comes from the United States: Anna Wolfe, from Missouri, gave birth to her daughter without knowing she was pregnant.

According to People, Wolfe was at home when, one night in August, around midnight she began to feel pain. Having had prior health issues, she thought it might be appendicitis or a kidney infection. She went to the hospital, and around 4 a.m. she received the life-changing news: she was pregnant and in labor.

“They ran tests and told me, ‘Actually, you’re in labor.’ I replied, ‘But I’m not pregnant,’ and they said, ‘Well, you are, and you’re in labor,'” Wolfe told Fox 10 News, as reported by People. Two hours after that episode, Anna had become a mother. “It didn’t even feel like mine,” she added. Wolfe experienced a so-called “cryptic pregnancy,” a condition in which a woman can be pregnant without realizing it. Varun Sankuratri, an obstetrician at Mercy Springfield, told U.S. media that it is an extremely rare phenomenon.

“Every pregnancy is different,” he said. “Every woman’s body is different. Some medical conditions can affect the appearance of the abdomen. Babies can be larger or smaller. I think it’s important to listen to your body and, if you’re concerned, it’s quite simple to get checked to clear up any doubt,” he emphasized. Looking back over the past months, Wolfe recalled many times when she felt unwell but continued to have her menstrual periods.
