The earthquake caused material damage, including falling façade elements and cornices, cracks and other detachments, but no casualties have been reported so far.

A strong earthquake of magnitude 5 struck the Granada area in southern Spain during the night between 14 and 15 August 2026, with its epicenter near Alhendín. According to updated data from the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN), the quake was recorded at 1:04 a.m. local time and was felt across ten provinces.

The tremor caused material damage, such as falling façade elements and cornices, cracks and other detachments, but there are no reported victims at this time. The earthquake was felt throughout much of Andalusia, where emergency services received more than 200 reports, and the regional government activated level 1 of the seismic risk emergency plan.

In the hours that followed, the IGN—which had initially estimated the quake’s magnitude at 4.8—recorded numerous aftershocks in the Granada area, some exceeding magnitude 3. The seismic sequence remains under observation.
