A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck central Peru today at 2:24 a.m., the German Research Centre for Geosciences reported. The epicenter was initially located at 12.05° S latitude and 75.15° W longitude, at a depth of 62.8 km. Local media report at least five fatalities in Chupaca province, in the Junín region, and say the quake caused collapses and serious damage in several areas.
